The “We the People” banner will be on display during a special firefighters fundraising event being held at AmeriQuest Field, (formerly known as, the Ballpark) in Arlington. The stadium is home to the Texas Rangers baseball team. Event organizer, Laura Carman has planned the day’s activities along with the Carrollton Fire Association. The charity event was given its name in honor of the 343 firemen that died on September 11, 2001 in NYC, but she said “it is intended to support the firemen that risk their lives everyday”.

Camp Live Oak offers a splendid life-giving, life-growing, life-changing experience, making a direct impact on children's lives, we hope, for a lifetime. In the past 4 years, Michael Joseph has instructed a very successful photography program at Camp Live Oak, and each year the class has grown. With two years away, he will return this year with the same infectious enthusiasm the organization has come to appreciate in Michael. The session is 1 hour each day for 1 week during the month of June, and July. Camp Director, Ken Evans has attributed the success of the program to “his ability to teach photography in a way that is educational and enjoyable for the children”. The program is designed to explore camper’s creative talents by: developing an individual style of photography in each camper, teaching campers about focus, lighting, and framing, through discussing texture, shape, shutter speeds, lenses, etc., and giving each camper an opportunity to make their own portfolio.

In scale, “the vision is to create the biggest love letter from America”, and the photo will resemble a postage stamp. Twelve additional blank sections were added for signing area. Subsequently to the mission, signatures were also collected on a petition to help elect the photograph entitled “In God We Trust” as a United States postage stamp.

Local Artist Donates Artwork

Encore Awards

Renowned local artist and contemporary photographer, Michael Joseph, has donated an original photographic artwork to present to this year's honorees of the 12th Annual Encore Awards. The Encore Awards are an opportunity for the local arts and cultural community to honor those individuals, businesses and volunteers whose support and contributions have helped them attain a new level of achievement in the arts. Joseph's work is a perfect match for the Encore Awards. His work captures a moment in time when one realizes there is truth, beauty and knowledge in everyday experiences. He captures a non-ordinary view of the ordinary. Similarly, without the extraordinary vision and contributions of individuals such as the Encore honorees, Broward's cultural community could not rise above the ordinary and achieve the successes it has. "We hope that Michael's work becomes a signature for the Encore Awards. We feel very fortunate to have him share his talent with us and to be able to present this original work to our honorees," says Cindy Stoddart, ArtServe Executive Director.

City Link Magazine
Best of Issue

This year the award was presented to Michael Joseph, of Fort Lauderdale. Well known for his fine art B&W images of architecture, industrial structures, and urban landscapes. His work is held in many important private, corporate, and museum collections. He has also received several national awards for his unique photographs.

I am really excited about this, City Link’s seventh annual "Best of Broward and Palm Beach." With well over 400 categories, I know this issue has something to amuse and enlighten everyone. This annual "Best of" issue, along with our Music and Art issues, supports the City Link mission statement, which says, in part, that we strive to be the most knowledgeable, useful and compelling news, arts and entertainment alternative to the mass media in South Florida. No gimmicks, just the best shot of the collective wisdom of a group of hard-working people who love the wildly disparate salsa that is South Florida and are proud to share its unique highlights with our readers.

Eco-Art Camp at ArtServe a Success!

Fort Lauderdale FL

2 May 2001

Educational Art Program

Students from Riverland and Virginia Shuman Young Elementary recently celebrated the end of a two-week arts education program developed to provide hands on experience in the arts to children ages 8 to 10. The program called Eco-Art Camp was made possible by the generous support of the A.D. Henderson Foundation and the Farver Foundation.

Eco-Art Camp consisted of five 2-hour sessions that were held on the school site. Activities were arts-based and incorporated hands-on activities. The object of each camp was to have every student produce a "work of art" such as a painting and photograph or to participate in the production of a song, choral performance or dance performance. At the completion of the program, each child came away with the idea that art in its many forms can increase understanding and enjoyment of life.

Noted photographer and artist Michael Joseph was selected by ArtServe to provide the photography instruction. "Curiosity, wonderment, and discovery-it is the essence of children and the true art of photography. The opportunity to teach anything is undeniably the occasion to learn something as well." said Joseph.

The children and their families celebrated their success at a special reception in ArtServe's JM Family enterprises Gallery, where their work was displayed over a two-week period.
